Two Free Chapters From The Trojan Horse of Leadership
This week I decided to give away a couple of chapters of my book, The Trojan Horse of Leadership: Battling the Enemy We All Face. I’ve attached the opening two chapters (the Introduction and Chapter 1), and hopefully it will entice you to get the book. Yes, it’s a shameless plug, but the bigger and more important reason for luring you in this way is because I believe so much in the power of great leadership. Maybe its because we…
In Praise of Every Day Heroes
I’m surrounded by heroes. Not the DC Comic or Marvel versions we see in the comics or at the movie theatres. As entertaining as they may be, they don’t really inspire me in meaningful ways. I’m also not talking about those courageous people who serve the general public by potentially putting themselves in harm’s way. Police, firemen, military, disaster-relief workers, or the like. Lastly, I’m not talking about those heroes who in a single moment were called upon to act…
What it Takes to Stand Strong in Today’s World – 3 Key Questions
Ever read something that left you inspired? Something so profound that it lifted you in unexpected ways. Happened to me recently, though I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit it. You see, as a pastor, I should not be taken aback by reading a book of the Bible, after-all, it’s profound teaching should be a continual source of inspiration. But recently I was especially struck by the book of 1 Peter. I was moved by the power of Peter’s arguments, especially in the…
The Future Church – What You Will Need To Thrive
Last week we talked about the massive cultural changes happening all around us and how our lives are being reshaped. The same is true for the church and for the way we are approaching worship and community.
Is Your Church Ready For the Next Major Shift in Ministry?
I hope you are having an amazing day! To say that we are witnessing incredible cultural changes is a bit of an understatement. Not only are we seeing dramatic changes in the way we live and work, but also in the way we worship. The old models that use to bring people in the door of our churches no longer give the kind of results we hope for. Those in the marketplace are having to devise new ways of reaching…
2018 Canadian Church Leaders Conference – Highlights and Conference Notes
This year, along with two staff members from our church, I attended the Canadian Church Leaders Conference held June 14-16th at Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario. This is the second year for this gathering and its primary attraction for me is its focus on the Canadian church. Though I appreciate the wealth of material and conferences that our friends south of the border provide, they have little to no understanding of the church dynamics in Canada. The Canadian focus, coupled…
The Two Main Factors that Determines the Winner in Any Election
If you live in Ontario you know that there is an election right around the corner. Ontarian’s go to the polls on Thursday, June 7th, and if anything can be said about this election is that its been a lesson in leadership missteps. Regardless, there are two factors that determine who wins an election. It doesn’t matter provincial or federal, these hold true. Further, it doesn’t’t matter what part of the world an election is being held, these two still…
The Main Reasons People Seek Out a Church
I continue to hear and read about the decline in church attendance. Even among the demographic of committed members, they are showing up less. It’s troublesome to say the least. Especially when church has a lot to offer. Considering the state of affairs I wondered, What would make a person or a family seek out a church? After-all, do we really have any idea what would drive a person to the doors of a church? Seekers are few and far…
The Enduring Power of Love
A lot has been written since the wedding of Prince Harry and Meagan Markle. Yes, I was one of the many who rose early in the day to watch the royal extravaganza. Whatever your reason for watching, the ceremony produced a number of surprises. The biggest surprise for me should not have been a surprise at all. It was the significant role that love played. This sounds strange considering it was a wedding after-all. If anything, love is the main…
Not Growing Spiritually? Here Are 6 Reasons Why You’re Likely Floundering.
Spiritual growth can be difficult. In our face-paced and media saturated culture we can find it difficult to experience peace, contentment, and deep connection with others. Add spiritual growth into the mix and chances are it finds little room in an otherwise hectic schedule. To complicate matters further, there is no one-size-fits-all formula for growth. We are all wired uniquely and have different ways of learning and growing. Regardless of how you best connect with God, there are some basics…
Immeasurably More – Our Focus for 2016-17
On Sunday February 28th, 2016, we gathered as a church to celebrate the completion of our new addition. It was wonderful to be able to dedicate this new space as a continuing expression of our mission and vision for Village Green. We also introduced our Immeasurably More Campaign. A phrase found in Ephesians 3:20, in which the apostle Paul expresses in doxological form, the fullness of his blessing to the church at Ephesus. For the many who laboured in faithfulness…
